Thais in the land of frozen smiles
It's hard to imagine two places more different than tropical Thailand and the Arctic Norwegian territory of Svalbard, or Spitsbergen as it is more commonly known after the main island in the frozen archipelago. But ironically Thais are the largest ethnic group here after the Norwegians. The total population of the main settlement Longyearbyen is only about 1,800, of whom 70 are Thais. Most of them are female cleaners and chambermaids in Longyearbyen's…

Norway Lures Carry Trade as Krone Rallies, Rates Rise
Norway's krone may become the next favorite for investors seeking the highest-yielding currencies as the central bank increases interest rates to quash inflation. "I like the Norwegian krone," said Paul Barrett, chief foreign-exchange trader in New York at J.P. Morgan Private Bank, which has $390 billion under management. "People are hunting for yields, and the rising interest rates make it attractive." Norges Bank said March 15 that it may raise…

Global warming melts the Arctic triggering a race for riches
Barren and uninhabited, Hans Island is very hard to find on a map. Yet these days the Frisbee-shaped rock in the Arctic is much in demand _ so much so that Canada and Denmark have both staked their claim to it with flags and warships. The reason: an international race for oil, fish, diamonds and shipping routes, accelerated by the impact of global warming on Earth's frozen north. The latest report by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change…

Norway's dash for Gaza
Why was Raymond Johansen, the Norwegian deputy foreign minister, in such a hurry to be the first European representative to meet Ismail Haniyeh, the prime minister of the new Palestinian unity government in Gaza? What was the hurry? He certainly read Haniyeh's March 17 speech in which the Hamas chief outlined the Fatah/Hamas government program. Haniyeh said: "The government affirms that resistance is a legitimate right of the Palestinian people."…

Happy to be outside the EU club
While European elites have been preparing for the Treaty of Rome's birthday, two non-members of the European Union have in recent weeks done little to contribute to a party mood. The Swiss have quarrelled with the EU over taxes - rejecting suggestions that theirs are too low - and Norwegian officials have got tough over plans to increase the country's fee for membership of the European Economic Area (EEA). The fee is already more than 200m euros…
